英国では“異様に算数が得意な人”と見なされてしまう日本人の一人として、わたしは某リベラルチャリティー系教育機関でAdult Numeracyの教員補助として時々ボランティアしている。

なので、読み書き・算数がきちんとできない英国の成人たちを再教育する現場というものがどういうものなのか知っているし、そのために労働党がどれほどの予算を費やし、底辺の人々を引きあげようとしてきたかを知っている。

 

はっきり言って、日本なら不合格になる12歳はいないだろう。というような超ちょろい算数のテストに合格するために勉強しているイングリッシュ・アダルトがどれほどいることか。

掛け算、割り算はおろか、足し算、引き算で躓いている。定規の目盛りも読めない。

これ、元ドラッグ中毒とか13歳で妊娠したとかで学校を中退した若人ばかりではない。

わりと普通に働いているおっさん、おばはんもいる。

 

「収入格差」も凄いけど、「教育格差」はもっと凄い。

というこの国の事情は頭では知っていたが、実際に24＋8を前にして手も足も出なくなっている英国人の大人がずらりと並んで座っているのを見た時には言葉を失った。
